Tarpon

Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus), or the “Silver King,” is a magnificent fish that leaps spectacularly when hooked. We have a resident population of tarpon that are here year-round, although we see a lot more – and bigger schools – in the summer and fall. The tarpon here range in size from just a few pounds to over 100 pounds.

Most of the tarpon we go after are in the 25-50 lb range, but you never know when you might hook into something bigger, so we normally use a twelve-weight rod. If you’re not used to casting a heavy rod like this, we’ll take you out and give you some instruction before we put you on the fish.

We have a healthy population of tarpon here in the Virgin Islands, and we are fortunate to be able to fish for them year round.

DSC_0057There is something special about catching a tarpon on the fly.  Watching this big fish slurp this little fly and then explode out of the water.  It’s an amazing experience.
